Face aux 52 sonates pour clavier, aux 83 quatuors à cordes et 104 symphonies, que peuvent bien peser les-seulement ! – trois oratorios de Haydn ? Eh bien, paradoxalement, ils sont d’une importance insigne. Déjà, ce Retour de Tobie (1774-1775), avec ses beaux chœurs, ses récitatifs accompagnés, ses airs renonçant pour la plupart au traditionnel Da Capo, sa richesse orchestrale, toutes qualités qui n’ont d’équivalent que chez Haendel…

Haydn composed fifty-two keyboard sonatas, eighty-three string quartets, a hundred and four symphonies, and just three oratorios. Paradoxically, however, these works are of absolutely remarkable importance, as may be seen, already, from his Il Ritorno di Tobia of 1774-1775, with its fine choruses, its recitativo accompagnato, its arias, most of them without the traditional repeat of the first section (da capo), its rich orchestration—qualities the likes of which are only to be found in Handel.
