Haendel – Le Messie

“ Je connais ma Bible et je saurai, aussi bien qu’un autre, y choisir des paroles convenables ”, se serait écrié un jour Haendel. De ses nombreux oratorios bibliques tirant leur inspiration des Écritures, Le Messie reste le plus célèbre. L’œuvre fut pourtant écrite à la hâte, en l’espace de quelques semaines entre le 22 août et le 14 septembre 1741, à une époque particulièrement délicate pour Haendel, alors à l’apogée de son génie créateur mais luttant en même temps contre de redoutables difficultés financières liées en partie au demi-échec de ses derniers opéras italiens…

“I know my Bible and am as capable as the next of choosing suitable words”, Handel is said to have exclaimed one day. Of his many biblical oratorios taking their inspiration from the Scriptures, Messiah is the most famous. Yet it was written in haste, in the space of a few weeks between 22 August and 14 September 1741, during a period that was particularly delicate for Handel: he was then at the height of his creative  powers but was struggling at the same time against formidable financial difficulties, partly due to the semi-failure of his most recent Italian operas.
