Les Séphardim, les juifs d’Espagne, après la publication de l’Edit d’expulsion en 1492 s’exilèrent en grande majorité dans les pays méditerranéens voisins de l’Afrique du Nord (Tétouan, Tanger) et plus particulièrement dans l’Empire Ottoman (Istanbul, Salonique, Izmir, Edirne, Rhodes) emportant avec eux une langue et une culture qu’ils allaient conserver jalousement. Tout au long de ces cinq siècles, la culture judéo-espagnole a été exposée à de nombreuses influences des pays traversés et des terres d’accueil. La musique judéo-espagnole se présente comme une mosaïque où le sacré coexiste avec le profane, les thèmes juifs avec les thèmes communs à toute l’humanité, l’orient comme l’occident, l’ancien avec le nouveau…/Sephardim (from the Hebrew Sefarad, Spain): members of the Jews, or their descendants, who lived in Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages until their mass expulsion in 1492. They then fled to North Africa (Tétouan, Tangier) and other parts of the Ottoman Empire (Istanbul, Salonica, Izmir, Edirne, Rhodes), where they preserved their customs and their language. In the next five hundred years the Judaeo-Spanish culture was exposed to numerous influences: those of the lands they traversed and of the countries where they finally settled. Judaeo-Spanish music is a mosaic in which the sacred coexists with the secular, Jewish themes are found alongside themes of a universal nature.
