En 1854, lorsque Livingstone visite la grande plaine du Zambèze, il s’exclame : « C’est une véritable terre de Canaan, un pays où coulent le lait et le miel ! ». Ce pays inondé par la crue du grand fleuve chaque mois de mars, se révèle riche en terres et en fruits, en antilopes et en oiseaux, en singes et en serpents, en poissons et en gibier, en grands troupeaux et en mines de cuivre. De nombreuses ethnies dirigées par des rois, «le Grand ou le Fils de la Terre», se partageaient un immense territoire entre le Zambèze et le Congo, le Kafue et le Kwando, dont une partie devient en 1964 l’actuelle Zambie…/When David Livingstone visited the great Zambezi plain in 1854, he exclaimed: ‘It’s a real land of Canaan, a land of milk and honey!’ This area, which was flooded each year in March when the great river was in spate, turned out to be rich in fertile land and fruit, antelopes and birds, monkeys and snakes, fish and game, great herds of livestock and copper mines. Many ethnic groups, each led by a king, known as ‘the Great or the Son of the Earth’, shared the immense territory between the Zambezi and the Congo, the Kafue and the Kwando, part of which became the country now known as Zambia in 1964.
