Depuis dix ans Lully était mort, et l’Opéra, désormais privé de l’homme de génie qui du premier coup l’avait porté à un si haut point de splendeur, traînait péniblement une existence obscure. Lorsqu’un jour de l’année 1697, Paris apprend, non sans surprise, que ce théâtre vient de remporter un triomphe éclatant avec la représentation d’un ouvrage nouveau dû à un compositeur complètement inconnu : L’Europe Galante de Joseph Campra, modeste musicien de l’Opéra./ Lully had been dead for ten years and the Opera, henceforth, deprived of the genius who had rapidly born it to such a high level of spendour, was painfully dragging out its obscure existence. Then, one day in 1697, Paris learnt, to its great surprise, that the theatre had just achieved a brilliant triumph with the production of a new work by a completely unknown composer : L’Europe Galante by Joseph Campra, a modest musician at the Opera.
