Au regard de ses contemporains, la vie de Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer reste encore quelque peu mystérieuse. Né à Turin d’un capitaine d’artillerie, intendant des fontaines et jardins de la cour de Savoie, Royer ne se penche sur la musique que par simple amusement dans un premier temps. Lorsque son père meurt sans lui laisser aucun héritage, il s’y lance pourtant avec ferveur en se faisant connaître comme claveciniste et organiste…/ Compared to that of his contemporaries, the life of Joseph-Nicolas Pancrace Royer is still something of a mystery. Born in Turin, a son of a captain in the artillery, commandant and intendant of fountains and gardens at the court of Savoy, Royer first took up music for amusement. But when his father died leaving nothing he turned to it as a profession, gaining a reputation as an organist and harpsichordist.
