Motets à la vierge – Le culte marial, un des plus anciens qui soient, est né avec l’Église. Dès les premiers siècles de notre ère les chrétiens honoraient en effet avec ferveur Marie élue reine de l’humanité, puis consacrée Mère de Dieu par le Concile œcuménique d’Éphèse en 431. On ne compte plus les chapelles, les églises et les cathédrales qui dès lors furent dédiées à la Vierge, et l’iconographie qui la représente est immense… / The Marian cult, or cult of the Virgin Mary, one of the oldest in existence, came into being with the Church. Indeed, from the earliest centuries of the Common Era, Christians honoured Mary, chosen as the Mother of Mankind, then as the Mother of God by the third ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431. Henceforth innumerable chapels, churches and cathedrals were dedicated to the Virgin and the iconography representing her was immense.
