L’île de Pâques, nommée aujourd’hui par ses habitants Rapa Nui, également appelée Te-Pito-te-Henua, « nombril du monde ». Ce nom ésotérique signifierait en fait plus simplement, et suivant la pensée maori, « la fin des terres », Pito en pascuan désignant le nombril mais aussi l’extrémité ou la fin. / Easter Island, known to its original inhabitants as Rapa-Nui, was also called Te-Pito-te-Henua, usually interpreted as « Navel of the World », but this esoteric name probably has a simpler meaning, more in keeping with Maori thought –« Land’s End » – the word « pito » in Pascuan meaning not only « navel », but also « end », Easter Island being the futhest east of the Polynesian Islands.
