Description
La construction de ce beffroi, l’un des plus beaux que l’on puisse admirer, fut entreprise en 1 380 et achevée en 1410. Ruiné par le feu en 1471, il est reconstruit alors même que l’on procède à l’extension de l’hôtel de Ville. Laissé à l’abandon après la Révolution, le beffroi est restauré en 1 850 et 1996. Depuis sa construction, plusieurs carillons se sont succédés. Le carillon ancien a été fondu par les Allemands en 1914. Reconstitué en 1925, il a été refait par les Ets. Paccard d’Annecy en 1954 et 1974 selon les normes modernes. Le carillon comporte 62 cloches reliées au clavier, dont la cloche des ouvriers ou la Disnée (3 tonnes) et Joyeuse (6 tonnes).
Building was started on this belfry, one of the finest in existence, in 1380 and it was completed in 1410. In 1471, it was destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt during extensions to the town hall. After the French Revolution, the belfry was left in a state of neglect; it was restored in 1850 and 1996. There have been several different carillons since the belfry was built. The old carillon was melted down by the Germans in 1914. It was replaced in 1925, and was finally brought up to modern standards by Paccard and Co of Annecy in 1954 and 1974. The carillon consists of 62 bells linked to the keyboard, including the ‘Cloche des Ouvriers’ or ‘La Disnee’ (3 tonnes) and ‘la Joyeuse’ (6 tonnes).
