Dans chacun des cinq chapitres des Lamentations, si on prend la première lettre de chaque verset on reconstitue, dans l’ordre conventionnel, l’alphabet hébraïque : de aleph à taw, vingt-deux lettres, vingt-deux versets par chapitre (pour être tout à fait précis, soixante-six versets dans le troisième chapitre – trois fois aleph, puis trois fois beth, etc – et vingt-deux versets, mais sans la contrainte alphabétique, dans le cinquième chapitre). Un texte acrostiche, donc, mais un acrostiche abstrait : ce n’est pas, comme souvent, un nom de personne qui s’y trouve encodé, mais, symboliquement, la langue elle-même : langue de la révélation, mais aussi langue de tout ce que l’homme est capable de dire, comme de tout ce qu’il n’est pas capable de dire… / The first four chapters of the Lamentations are alphabetic acrostics. Chapters 1, 2 and 4 have twenty-two verses, which is the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet. The first letter of the first verse is aleph (the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet) and that of verse 22 is taw (the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet). Chapter 3 has sixty-six verses – aleph beginning the first three, beth the second three, and so on. Chapter 5 is not an alphabetic acrostic, although like the others it has twenty-two verses. This acrostic symbolises language: the language of revelation, but also the language of everything that man is capable, or incapable, of saying.
