Les origines de la flûte, comme celles de nombreux instruments à vent, se perdent dans la nuit des temps. Symbole de vie chez les anciens, elle était déjà présente dans la musique occidentale au Moyen Age. Jusqu’à l’époque classique, on pratiqua beaucoup la flûte à bec, dite aussi flûte d’Angleterre ou flûte ‘douce”, bientôt détrônée par la flûte traversière, ou flûte allemande, sa concurrente, qui atteignit son apogée en France et en Allemagne au XVIIIe siècle…

The history of the flute, like that of many wind instruments, goes back ta the dawn of time. The ancients considered it ta be a symbol of iiîe. It was already present in Western music during the Middle Ages. Until the classical period, the recorder ( also known as the common flute or English flute) was very widespread; it was soon deposed by its rival, the transverse flute (otherwise known as the cross flute or German flute), which reached the height of its popularity in France and Germany in the eighteenth century.
