Les îles Féroé, ou Faeroe, ou encore Faerøne, constituent un archipel danois, composé de 18 îles et situé au nord de l’Ecosse. Sa superficie est de 1399 km2 pour 46 000 habitants (les Féringiens ou Féroïens). Sa capitale, Thorshavn, est un port de l’île de Strømø et accueille 14 750 habitants. Malgré la latitude, le climat est tempéré mais l’humidité y est constante. La pêche (morue, hareng) est, avec l’agriculture et un élevage d’appoint (pommes de terre et moutons), la principale ressource. / The Faeroe Islands (also spelled Faroe Islands; Danish name: Faerøne) belong to the kingdom of Denmark. This group of eighteen islands lies in the North Atlantic between Iceland and the Shetland Islands. It has a total area of 540 square miles (1,399 square kilometres) and a population of 48,000 (1990). The capital is Thorshavn, a port on the island of Strømø with a population of 14,750. The climate is oceanic and mild, with frequent fog and rain. The islands’ economy is based on fishing (cod, herring). Economic supplements to this base include sheep raising and the main crops include potatoes and other vegetables.
