Les Quatre Saisons (le Quatro Stagioni) occupent une place de choix dans l’œuvre de Vivaldi. Comment expliquer cette sorte de passion, cet aurait, irré­sistible qui, depuis la vraie redécouverte du, Prêtre roux », il y a un demi-siècle, accompagnent ces quatre concertos pour violon, si ce n’est par la bonne humeur bienfaisante et la joie lumineuse qu’ils distillent ? Ils font partie d’un recueil de douze concertos que Vivaldi dédia au comte Wenzel von Morzin et qu’il fit paraître vers 1725 chez l’éditeur Le Cène à Amsterdam, sous le titre d’ Il Cimenta dell’armonia e dell’invenzione (op.8). Ce titre évoque l’idée d’une confrontation entre l’harmonie et l’invention, ou plus simplement d’une lutte entre le carcan de la théorie et la liberté de l’inspiration. Ils ont vraisem­blablement été composés bien avant 1725, puisque dans sa dédicace, Vivaldi remercie le comte von Morzin de les, avoir appréciés depuis longtemps »…

Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) occupy a choice position in Vivaldi’s œuvre. How can we explain the sort of passion and irresistible attraction that these four violin concertos have exerted since « il preto rosso » was truly rediscovered half a century ago, other than by their refreshing good humour and radiant joy ? They belong to a set of twelve concertos dedicaled by Vivaldi to Count Wenzeslaus von Morzin, which were published by Le Cène in Amsterdam in 1725 as part of Il Cemento dell’armonia e dell’invenzione (op.8). The little conjures up the idea or a contest belween harmony and invention or, more simply, a struggle between the shackles or theory and the freedom of inspiration. They were probably composed quite some time before 1725, for, in his dedication, Vivaldi thanks Count Morzin for ‘having long appreciated them”.
