Plus connu et admiré en son temps que Jean-Sébastien Bach, son contemporain et son ami, parfois rival, Georg Philipp Telemann qui fut aussi le parrain de Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, compte parmi les musiciens qui contribuèrent le plus largement à l’épanouissement de la musique germanique. En 1740, dans son recueil de biographies, Grundlagen einer Ehrenpforte, Johann Mattheson affirmait déjà qu’il était le seul compositeur qui fût au-dessus de tout éloge. Au XIXe siècle, sa notoriété pâtit cependant de la redécouverte et de la renaissance de l’œuvre de Bach : on eut alors tendance à ne voir en lui qu’un auteur si fécond qu’il en devenait superficiel. La brièveté des notices qui lui sont accordées encore aujourd’hui dans certains ouvrages sur la musique, en comparaison avec celles consacrées à Bach ou même à Haendel, est à cet égard assez révélatrice…
Better-known and more admired in his time than his contemporary, friend, and sorne¬times rival, Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, who was also the godfather of Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, is one of the musicians who made the greatest contribution to the blossoming of Germanie music. ln 1740, in his collection of biographies entitled Grundlage einer Ehren-Pforte, Johann Mattheson affirmed that he was the only composer who was beyond praise. ln the 19th century, however, his fame suffered on account of the rediscovery and revival of the works of Bach: there was a tendency to see him simply as a composer who was prolific to the point of superficiality. The brief entries we find under his name in certain works on music even today, compared to those we find under Bach or even Handel, are quite revealing. ..
