Haëndel – Water Music

On a beaucoup glosé sur la genèse et la forme de la Water Music allant même jusqu’à en faire un acte de contrition (!) de Hændel à l’égard de son ancien maître, l’électeur Georg-Ludvig de Hanovre devenu George 1er d’Angleterre à la mort de la Reine Anne (1er Août 1714). A cette version bien romanesque, il suffit d’opposer trois documents irréfutables, incontestables que nous relate l’histoire de ce divertissement sur l’eau. La Water Music en effet a été écrite pour accompagner une fête sur la Tamise, le mercredi 17 juillet 1717, le roi s’étant rendu de Whitehall à Chelsea où il soupa dans la villa de Lord Ranelagh avant de revenir à Saint-James Palace….

There has been a great deal of idle talk about the origins and the form of Handel’s Water Music, some even going so far as say it was an act of penitence (!) on the composer’s part towards his former master, Georg Ludwig, Elector of Hanover, who had become George I of England on the death of Queen Anne (1rst August 1714)1. This rather fanciful version is refuted without a doubt by three accounts of this entertainment on the water – The Water Music was written to accompany a procession on the Thames, which took place on Wednesday 17 July 1717: the King sailed from Whitehall to Chelsea, where he had supper at the villa of Lord Ranelagh, before returning to St James’s Palace.
