For her debut album, soprano Giulia Bolcato has chosen to join forces with the Remer En[1]semble to present the never-before-recorded complete version of Barbara Strozzi’s Op. 8. It’s a choice born of a desire to perform this Venetian composer’s refined yet boldly original com[1]positions.
“I am aware of the ever-increasing demand for entrepreneurial skills in my field, and in this regard, Barbara Strozzi has been a font of inspiration: raised as an illegitimate daughter in a wealthy home, she had to defy convention in order to make her way, living near to the margins of society, showing determination and an extraordinary ability to create works of great artistic value. For this reason, I wanted to make this Barbara Strozzi album to celebrate her music, her tenacity and to bring to light the beauty and historical importance of this great composer’s music.” Giulia
As a musician, I’ve always been fascinated by the music of 17th century Italy and its ex[1]traordinary expressive richness. As this music was almost exclusively written by male com[1]posers, I am interested in recognizing and promoting the work of those few women who were courageous enough to challenge social stigma and present themselves as composers and musicians. Barbara Strozzi is, in many respects, an exceptional figure: not only was she a professional musician in a predominately male milieu, but as a composer she also has an extraordinary capacity to fuse distinctive musical expressiveness with a personal poetic sensibility that results in works of great emotional intensity.

Pour son premier album, Giulia Bolcato présente avec le Remer Ensemble l’Op. 8 de Barbara Strozzi dans sa version intégrale jamais enregistrée auparavant. Ce choix est le fruit du désir d’interpréter les œuvres élégantes et en même temps audacieuses et originales de la compositrice vénitienne, œuvres pouvant être l’objet d’une lecture personnelle, riche en affects et nuances.
(…)Je vis mon travail avec la conscience qu’on nous demande de plus en plus de compétences d’entrepreneur et sous cet angle j’ai trouvé chez Barbara Strozzi une source d’inspiration : elle a grandi dans une famille aisée en tant que fille illégitime et a dû se frayer un chemin défiant les conventions, acceptant de vivre presque aux marges de la société, montrant ainsi une détermination et habileté hors du commun dans la création d’œuvres d’une grande valeur artistique. J’ai donc voulu enregistrer ce disque sur Barbara Strozzi pour célébrer sa musique, sa ténacité et pour mettre en lumière la beauté et l’importance historique des œuvres de cette extraordinaire compositrice. Barbara Strozzi (Venise 1619 – Padoue 1677) occupe une place importante dans l’histoire de la musique, pas tellement en raison de son sexe mais, comme tous les compositeurs, pour la qualité et la nouveauté de sa production musicale.
