Avec le 19ème siècle naquit un nouvel opéra italien à travers lequel le public allait s’assimiler totalement aux drames et aux passions vécus par les personnages. Donizetti, Bellini et Rossini ont dominé la première moitié de ce siècle, Donizetti par son talent de mélodiste. Bellini par « cette note émue et palpitante. (cette) cantilène attendrie (…) dans toute l’éloquence de son expression » que releva Henri Blaze de Bry, Rossini par son habileté inouïe et sa verve alerte et enjouée. Avec eux s’annonçait l’unification d’un goût national…

The 19th century saw the birth of a new form of Italian opera which enabled audiences to identify completely with the dramas and passions of the characters. Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini dominated the first hait of the century: Donizetti by his talent for melody and for creating a sentimental atmosphere. Bellini by his gifts for Jyricism and flowing eloquence, Rossini by his musical power and the wit, speed and grace of his works. Through them, and through Verdi, who came later: opera became one of the great features of Italian music.
