Description

For the well-informed music lover, the name of Onslow is no longer unfamiliar; with great pleasure he discovers works that had until now been consigned to oblivion. This Frenchman, who was born in the Auvergne, ot English descent, was one ot the most original composers of his generation. His output speaks for itsell: thirty-six string quartets, thirty-tour string quintets mostly for violin, two violins and two cellos, duos, trios, quintets and sextets with piano, and so on. Such a corpus is all the more astonishing when we realize that, during the first half ot the 19th century, any French composer who wislied to establish a reputation for himselt as duty bound to compose tor the stage. Onslow himselt was aware ot that temptation, hut after three fruitless attempts (his operas were a vague success with a limited public), he gave up operatic works once and for all and devoted himself to chamber music instead. He thus became one of the few French counterparts of Beethoven, Spohr, Schubert and Mendelssohn…
