Description

Leopold Mozart owes much of his fame to the tact that he was the father-and a somewhat stimng one, it must be admitted-of a genius. He nevertheless left a good many works that are most certainly worthy of interest, including the most mustrious Toy Symphony, which, for a long time, was attributed to Joseph Haydn. Few people realise that the latter (along with the equally famous Sleigh Ride) forms part of a vast Cassation in G minor. This work, in which tender, sometimes facile emotion gives way to a gentle way of life and a very Viennese freshness, seems to be solidly constructed. It is the tinkling and rattling of children’s toys (rattle, cuckoo clock, bell, whistle, trumpet), which go at it to their heart’s content above the orchestra, that have largely contributed to the popularity of this lively piece.
