Description

Slavery was abolished in 1865, after the American Civil War. The new generation of black Americans reached adult status in about 1890—a generation that was unstable, disappointed in the social, economic and political conditions of the time, and bitter at seeing its parents and grandparents (who had spent their adult lives as slaves) still adopting the attitudes of the past. That first generation of free blacks opened up great breaches in ideas on education, economic development, political organisation, art and, above all, music.
