Description

 It was probably sometime during the year 1786 that Haydn received an important commission from Spain, a request from a canon of Cadiz Cathedral to compose an instrumental score for Passiontide to illustrate the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. A few years later Haydn himself explained: ‘At that time, it was customary for an oratorio to be performed each year during Lent at the Cathedral of Cadiz, and its effect must have been considerably enhanced by the setting: the walls, windows and columns of the church were draped with black cloth, a great lamp hanging in the middle of the chancel providing the only light in that holy darkness.
