Le 30 septembre 1853, Robert et Clara Schumann reçurent à Düsseldorf un musicien de vingt ans : Johannes Brahms, venu de Hambourg, sur la recommandation de son ami le violoniste Joseph Joachim. Brahms était loin d’ignorer les œuvres de Schumann et il avait eu l’opportunité d’écouter Clara, pianiste de renom, interpréter le répertoire de son mari lors d’un concert en 1850. L’accueil des Schumann est enthousiaste. Le lendemain, Robert note dans son journal intime : « Visite de Brahms : un génie ! ». Il songe aussitôt à faire connaître le « jeune aigle » au public. Pour cela il reprend la plume, des années après avoir abandonné sa tribune de critique musical, pour louer « celui qui devait venir ». / September 30, 1853, Robert and Clara Schumann received in Düsseldorf a twenty years old musician: Johannes Brahms, who came from Hamburg, on the recommendation of his friend the violinist Joseph Joachim.
