Pietro Della Valle naît à Rome le 11 avril 1586, dans l’une des familles les plus nobles et les plus riches de la ville. Il est initié à la poésie par son cousin Scipione Caetani, médiocre poète qui sait pourtant susciter chez lui un amour pour la poésie et la musique qui ne le quittera plus. Mais son éducation est surtout musicale. Son premier maître est Stefano Tavolacci, organiste de l’église de la Madonna del Popolo, avec lequel il progresse si vite qu’il doit longtemps jouer « à la quinte » car il n’a pas, à sept ans, les mains assez grandes pour atteindre l’octave. A la mort de Tavolacci, il continue l’étude du contrepoint et du clavecin avec Quintio Solini, puis avec le plus célèbre encore Paolo Quagliati. Il étudie également le violon et la viole de gambe… / Pietro Della Valle was born in Rome on the 11th of April 1586, into one of the noblest and richest families in the city. He was introduced to poetry by his cousin Scipione Caetani, a second-rate poet who, however, succeeded in arousing in him a love of poetry and music that would never leave him. His education was mainly musical. His first teacher was Stefano Tavolacci, organist of the church of the Madonna del Popolo, with whom he made such quick progress that he was obliged for a long time to play ‘in fifths’ because, at seven years old, his hands were not big enough to stretch to the octave. On the death of Tavolacci, Della Valle continued to study counterpoint and harpsichord with Quintio Solini, and later with the even more famous Paolo Quagliati.
